About the Scholastic Art Awards

The Scholastic Art & Writing Awards is coordinated by The Alliance for Young Artists & Writers, a not-for-profit organization.
Since 1923 The Scholastic Art & Writing Awards program has fostered the creative development of teenagers across the country. This is done by identifying emerging artists for college scholarship consideration and by showing their work to a national audience.
Since its inception The Scholastic Art and Writing Awards has:
evaluated work from more than twelve million 7th through 12th grade students.
recognized more than two million talented young artists and writers.
distributed more than $20 million in awards and scholarships.
given early recognition to some of our nation's most accomplished artists and writers including; Richard Avedon, Truman Capote, Fannie Farmer, Bernard Malamud, Joyce Maynard, Joyce Carol Oates, Phillip Pearlstein, Sylvia Plath, Robert Redford, and Andy Warhol.
The Colorado Connection
The Colorado region is sponsored by the Colorado Art Educators Association.
Rocky Mountain College of Art + Design in Lakewood, Colorado serves as the home-base for the competition.
In 2008, more than 3,000 Colorado students entered their work.
More than 450 students received Gold Keys, Silver Keys and Honorable Mention awards.
This prestigious national competition has been an annual event in Colorado since 1948.
Professional artists, professors and retired teachers judge all entries. They look for originality, technical competence, and personal voice.
Colorado's Gold Key winners are sent to the national level where they compete with Gold Key winners from other states.
Regional Awards
Award recipients are recognized with "keys" (lapel pins) and certificates at the regional level.
Gold Key Awards: Gold Key Awards advance to the national competition.

This work was done by a grad. student at CU. She was an assistant for Cristina Cordova. I met her at Penland this summer when I took a class from Cristina. This was a great show! This student is working under Kurt Weiser. Look at his work, it is amazing. You can tell that her professor is interested in imagery. These were some of my favorite pieces at the show.

This was an amazing piece. It really catches the emotion of the child. The dress is an actual dress.

This piece really tells a story. I know some of you (students) will really like this one!

Mixed Media. What can I say? I love it. Makes me want to go out and get discarded items. Don't throw anything away!!!
